Victoria Bilogan

ARTIST STATEMENT

Engaged in fine art printmaking, drawing, painting, book arts, and cross-disciplinary projects with experience in exhibitions, prize competitions, and residencies.

My practice as a printmaker is focused on large-format intaglio copper plate mezzotints and xylography.

Explorations of the human condition, specifically connectedness and isolation are themes for my artworks.

The idea of the collective subconscious inspires my vision of Humankind as a meta-organism drawing on the dynamics that unite us, not that which divides us. In my works I am trying to capture intense moments of existence, to observe  transformation of ordinary into extraordinary. Our emotional ecology defines our decisions about how to be in the world.

In an increasingly mechanised and toxic world it is important to protect our emotional ecology and humanity.

" I try to capture the intense moments of existence via emotions and explore the politics of empathy in my work. "

Artist Biography

Born in Odessa, Victoria graduated with a double degree in arts and music performance in Ukraine followed up by further degrees of Master in Piano Performance and Bachelor of Fine Arts in Printmaking from The University of Melbourne, VCA.

Victoria confirmed her Ph.D. candidacy in 2011, at Adelaide University.

The distinct quality in her work is inextricably linked with and informed by her parallel career as a musician: her versatility allowed her to combine the career of a solo classical pianist and from 1994-2003 Victoria was an art director and recording artist with platinum record B2 band (Sony Music, 2000).

Victoria’s graduation work was selected for Australia in Japan Art Council Exchange, Tokyo Fine Arts Academy (2006).

Being awarded First Prize in the Second Edition Venice Printmaking Competition resulted in a collaboration with Artevisione and Atelier 3+10 in Venice, Italy (2018).

Explorations of the Human condition, specifically connectedness and isolation are the main themes of her art. The idea of the collective subconscious inspires her vision of Humankind as a meta-organism drawing on the dynamics that unite us, not divide us.

Large scale monochrome works capture the intense moments of existence, our emergence from a state of non-Being into the blissful and transient state of Being and Becoming.

Victoria is a recipient of numerous art awards (Peebles Print Prize People’s Choice Award 2021, International Intaglio Triennial Silver Basket Excellence Award, Ukraine 2021, FPS Artist’s Book Award Grand Prize  2020, Australia, Worlds’ Heritage Triennial 20201, Excellence Honorary diploma, Russia, amongst recent) and her work has been exhibited worldwide in juried and invitational exhibitions. Her solo exhibitions were presented in Italy, Ukraine, and Australia. Victoria’s works are part of significant public and private collections in Australia and overseas (Guanlan Printmaking Museum, China, White World Gallery Ukraine, Vernon National Museum, Canada, and Ekaterinburg Museum of Fine Arts) amongst others.

I like exploring the inner horizons of the human psyche and outer horizons we set and travel to. Both the ego and the shadow, to own it and experience the joy of being, by being whole.
